Strategic and flagship project in the Baltic Sea
The EfficienSea project both enjoys the label of ”strategic project” within the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013 and the status of ”flagship project” in the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea region.

The EfficienSea project has been labelled as a ”strategic project” by the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013.
Being a strategic project, gives the project a preferential position to apply for funding to continue project implementation in an additional period of up to two years after the project is completed, and also entails certain other benefits.

The four cornerstones of the Baltic strategy
The EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region is the first EU macro regional strategy and was adopted by all 27 EU Member States in the Autumn of 2009. The four cornerstones of the Strategy are to make the Baltic Sea region more environmentally sustainable (for example by reducing pollution in the sea); more prosperous (for example by promoting innovation in small and medium enterprises); more accessible and attractive (for example by creating better transport links); and last, but not least, more safe and secure (for example by improving maritime safety and accident response).

The implementation of the strategy is addressed in the accompanying action plan, which consist of 15 priority areas, each of which are to be implemented through a number of so-called flagship projects.

EfficienSea enjoys the status of flagship project in the strategy´s priority no 13, which has as its overriding aim "to become a leading region in maritime safety and security".
Denmark, together with Finland, are priority area coordinators for this priority, and in Denmark the Danish Maritime Safety Administration is the responsible agency.
Needless to say, only few projects enjoys both the label of strategic and at the same time the status of flagship project. This underlines the seriousness of the issues addressed by the EfficienSea project.
